Surgical Weight Loss Procedures

The Surgical Weight Control Center at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury offers patients three options for weight loss surgery. The majority of our procedures are done using a technique that leaves minimal scars. This is known as laparoscopic surgery. This technique allows us to perform your surgery through a few small incisions. Using smaller incisions means less pain, fewer complications, and a shorter hospital stay. To determine the procedure that is best for you, register for one of our free seminars.

Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y)

This surgery makes the stomach smaller and alters digestion so less food is eaten and fewer calories are absorbed. The bariatric surgeon creates a small pouch by dividing the upper part of the stomach from the rest of the stomach. Next, a section of the small intestine is attached to the new pouch to allow food to bypass parts of your stomach and intestines. The procedure creates a connection from the new, smaller stomach to the lower segment of the small intestine. Gastric bypass works by allowing food to bypass parts of your digestive tract, therefore fewer calories are absorbed. Watch an online video».

Adjustable Gastric Banding

This surgery makes the stomach smaller by forming a small pouch at the top of the stomach using the LapBand. This smaller stomach gives your body the sensation that you are full so will eat less food. The LapBand can be adjusted to meet the individual patient's needs by inserting or removing saline from the band though a needle inserted into a port located just under the skin. This procedure is also reversible as the LapBand can be removed. Watch an online video».

Sleeve Gastrectomy

This surgery reduces the size of your stomach to about 15% of its original size. After surgery, the remaining part of your stomach is shaped like a banana or “sleeve”. Your smaller stomach allows you to feel full after eating less food. Although this procedure is not reversible, patients who do not achieve optimal weight loss can have a gastric bypass at a later date. Watch an online video».
