Benefits
Gastric bypass is the gold standard of bariatric surgery and provides many benefits. These benefits are only fully seen if you stay committed to the lifestyles changes. In our program, patients typically lose 50 – 70% of their excess weight. What that means is if you are 100 pounds overweight, you will lose 50 – 70 pounds. Most of this weight is lost during the first year after surgery and your weight will stabilize 18 – 24 months after your procedure. Also, many of your other medical conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep problems) may be improved or cured. In addition to the weight loss, we find many of our patients become more active and engaged in life.
Gastric banding offers patients a weight loss procedure where there is not stapling, cutting, or rerouting the intestines. Patients see a slower and steadier weight loss as compared to other procedures. It is adjustable to meet each patient’s needs and reversible. It is safer than the gastric bypass and patients do not have to worry about dumping syndrome or some of the potential vitamin deficiencies more common in certain bariatric procedures. It is common for many of your medical conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep problems) to improve.
Risks
Bariatric surgery is a safe and effective weight loss procedure, however it is major surgery and does carry risks.p>
Some of the complications include: hernias, leaks, ulcers, nausea, vomiting, blood clots, bleeding, infection, or death. Many of these potential complications can be avoided by tests that perform before you leave the hospital and by you following our post-operative guidelines.
